Pragmatics in a new language
Learning pragmatics is fundamental to understand better a language, moreover when this is a foreign one, knowing how to use and when can use a word is the principal objective of it. The same word or phrase can have different meanings in different contexts.
Due to this, pragmatics have a special influence on the learning process, because without knowing how the context contributes to meaning; a foreign language learner can have a misunderstanding owing to the false interpretations between the interpreter and interpreted with different cultures and social backgrounds. Learn it is the key to being able to take part in conversations and interactions in socially acceptable ways.
There are many techniques to develop the pragmatics competence such as:
1.Practise the target language
2.Allowing learners to demonstrate their skills
3.Receive constructive feedback
4.Observe linguistic input.
5. Exposing learners to the linguistic choices of speakers of the target community.
6.Develop intercultural communication skills.
7.Provide opportunities to study content through different perspectives.
The pragmatics is clearly necessary when we take part in a social interaction; as for example:
1. A visit to the doctor, when he or she asks about how is the patient. The correct answer would be explain the pain that the sufferer feel and not only answer "I'm fine" how is normal in an interaction with friends.
2. If the speaker says to the receiver "I heart you" instead of "I love you", and the receiver doesn't understand the meaning of the first one this could lead to a misunderstanding.
3. In the context that a person is walking bump into a friend of a friend, who says, "Hey, how're you doing? ", it's common to answer "Good thanks, and you?" and not explain the lows and highs of the week.
